My name is Michael Maloney and I’m a Licienced Clinical Professional Counselor or LCPC. I see individual and couples in therapy.

People often ask me how long I have worked in the field.  That can be a tricky question. My career has been a mixture of research and clinical mental health work.   Thus my work experience is a venn diagram of those two fields. I used to work at a community health center where I was inspired by the amazing work and compassion that the staff had for everyone that walked into their doors.  The center focused on LGBTQI, sex positive, and HIV/AIDS populations and often benefited from the amazing staff who daily inspired me. The staff knew that patients often had experienced shame, confusion, and sterile responses from medical care, but were welcomed with friendliness, patience during explanations and a welcoming environment.  I wanted to be part of that caring model they demonstrated. I’m very privileged to have heard many stories and have worked with so many great people, both as co-workers and as clients. Working there shaped my focus on creating a non-judgemental and affirming space where people feel safe to return.

My work in research was often in preventative medicine, whether working on a longitudinal HIV study, STI prevention, addiction, smoking cessation, mental health, and reviewing of ethics.  Most of my research experience has helped shaped how I do practice, not in just understanding the studies, but in how we create our own experiments in life. We are bombarded with data on a daily basis and have few opportunities to sit down and analyze what that data is telling us.  I have used many tools to build and practice research studies to help people create their own experiments in reshaping their lives to meet their goals.

I have also had experience volunteering with crisis calling, doing presentations and assisting at shelter focusing on domestic violence, police misconduct, hate crimes, LGBTQI populations, and poly/consensual non-monogamy.  I also completed a post graduate training in areas of trauma informed therapy, multicultural issues, LGBTQI populations, and expressive therapies.

I have been solely in private practice now since 2017, though have been in the mental health world longer than that.  I’ve expanded my training in couples work and attended Externship in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) and have gone through Level I training Gottman Institute in working in couples. I do bring a wealth of knowledge with me and have had trainings and skills for the following areas:
